OFCOM’s ruling for the billing of “non-geographic” numbers came into effect from 1st July in the UK. It is now free to call 0800 numbers from mobiles, and calling 087, 084 and 09 numbers will carry a set charge, making it easier for consumers to calculate the cost of calling premium-rate numbers.
Whereas before you might hear messages such as “Calls cost 50p from a BT landline, other landlines may vary and calls from mobiles may cost considerably more”, now you should hear something more along the lines of “Calls cost 50p per minute plus your phone company’s access charge”.
